1. Message queue
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
A component that stores messages from producing applications until consuming applications are ready to process them, decoupling services and smoothing load spikes. RabbitMQ, Amazon SQS, ActiveMQ and IBM MQ are examples.
Example: Orders go onto the MQ, and the warehouse service picks them up at its own pace.
Queues keep messages safe even if a consumer is down, and patterns include point-to-point queues and publish-subscribe topics. IBM's MQSeries (1993), now IBM MQ, was an early commercial product and helped make "MQ" a common suffix. Apache Kafka, often compared with queues, is more precisely a distributed log.
2. Multi-mission unmanned aircraft
Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations
US designation prefix for drones that perform more than one mission, typically surveillance and strike, as in the MQ-9 Reaper, MQ-1C Gray Eagle and MQ-25 Stingray. M means multi-mission and Q unmanned.
Example: An MQ-9 struck the vehicle after tracking it for six hours.
The prefix RQ marks unarmed reconnaissance drones, such as the RQ-4 Global Hawk. The earlier MQ-1 Predator pioneered armed drone strikes after 2001. The Navy's MQ-25 is designed as a carrier-based refueling drone.
3. Martinique
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
French overseas region in the Lesser Antilles, with Fort-de-France as its capital. The 1902 eruption of Mount Pelée destroyed the former capital, Saint-Pierre, killing about 28,000 people.
Example: Rum from MQ carries an AOC label, unique among rums.
Martinique is part of the EU and uses the euro. Empress Joséphine, Napoleon's first wife, was born there. The alpha-3 code is MTQ.
