MRAP stands for Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Family of armored vehicles with V-shaped hulls that deflect blasts from mines and IEDs, rushed into service from 2007 to protect troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Example: The MRAP took the full force of the roadside bomb, and all five soldiers walked away.
Usage notes
More than 20,000 MRAPs were bought, a program pushed personally by Defense Secretary Robert Gates. Lighter M-ATV models were built for Afghanistan's rough terrain. Many surplus MRAPs were later given to US police departments. Pronounced "EM-rap."
