MLRS stands for Multiple Launch Rocket System, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
M270 tracked rocket launcher that fires two pods of guided or unguided rockets or missiles, entering US service in the early 1980s and used by many NATO armies. The term is also used generically for any multiple rocket launcher.
Example: The British Army sent MLRS launchers to Ukraine alongside US HIMARS.
Usage notes
The original MLRS rockets carried cluster submunitions and were nicknamed "steel rain" in the 1991 Gulf War. Modern versions fire GPS-guided GMLRS rockets. Russia's Grad and Smerch systems are often described as MLRS in news reports.
