NASAMS stands for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, a weapon and military equipment abbreviation.
Medium-range air defense system developed by Norway's Kongsberg and the US company Raytheon that fires AMRAAM missiles from ground launchers, defending against aircraft, cruise missiles and drones.
Example: NASAMS batteries helped protect Kyiv from cruise missile and drone attacks.
Usage notes
The first N stood originally for "Norwegian." NASAMS has protected the airspace around Washington, D.C., and was supplied to Ukraine from 2022. Using air-to-air missiles from the ground reduces cost and simplifies logistics.
