CategoriesTechnology & Computing

SQS stands for Simple Queue Service, a cloud computing abbreviation.

A fully managed message queue on AWS that lets applications send, store and receive messages between components, so each part can work independently and absorb spikes in load.

Example: Upload events go into SQS, and a fleet of workers processes them at its own pace.

Usage notes

SQS was the first AWS service offered to the public, as a beta in 2004. Standard queues offer near-unlimited throughput with at-least-once delivery, while FIFO queues guarantee order and exactly-once processing. Messages that keep failing can be moved to a dead-letter queue for inspection.
