1. Site reliability engineering
Technology & Computing · Cloud Computing Abbreviations
A discipline that applies software engineering to operations, keeping services reliable through automation, monitoring, incident response and measurable targets such as service level objectives and error budgets. SRE is also the job title of engineers who do this work.
Example: The SRE team froze feature launches because the service had burned through its monthly error budget.
Ben Treynor Sloss created the practice at Google in 2003, describing it as what happens when you ask a software engineer to design an operations team. Google's 2016 book "Site Reliability Engineering" spread the ideas widely. Key concepts include reducing toil, blameless postmortems and capping operational work at about half of an engineer's time.
2. Site reliability engineer
Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations
Engineer who applies software engineering to operations, keeping large-scale systems reliable, scalable and efficient through automation, monitoring, incident response and capacity planning. SREs define service-level objectives and error budgets that balance reliability with release speed.
Example: The SRE on call rolled back the release within minutes of the error rate spiking.
Google created the discipline in 2003 under Ben Treynor Sloss and described it in the 2016 book Site Reliability Engineering. SRE refers both to the role and to the discipline, which is closely related to, but more prescriptive than, DevOps.
