1. Trusted Platform Module

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Security chip, or firmware equivalent, that stores encryption keys, certificates and boot measurements in hardware that resists tampering. Windows uses it for BitLocker disk encryption, Windows Hello sign-in and Secure Boot checks.

Example: Windows 11 setup says the PC isn't supported because TPM 2.0 is disabled in the BIOS.

The Trusted Computing Group publishes the standard; TPM 2.0 (2014) became the international standard ISO/IEC 11889. Microsoft made TPM 2.0 a Windows 11 requirement in 2021, briefly driving up prices of plug-in TPM modules. Most modern PCs have firmware TPMs built into the processor, called fTPM on AMD and PTT on Intel, which simply need enabling in the firmware.

2. Technical program manager

Business & Finance · Job Title Abbreviations

Professional who coordinates complex, cross-team technical programs, such as a platform migration or hardware launch, managing dependencies, timelines, risks and communication between engineering groups. The title is especially common at large technology companies.

Example: The TPM tracks 14 teams' dependencies for the data center migration.

TPMs need enough technical depth to understand architecture and trade-offs, unlike many general project managers. Amazon, Google and Microsoft employ large numbers of them. In manufacturing, TPM also means total productive maintenance.

3. Topiramate

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Antiseizure drug widely prescribed for migraine prevention and epilepsy, and combined with phentermine (Qsymia) for weight loss. Brand name Topamax.

Example: TPM 25 mg nightly, increase by 25 mg weekly to 50 mg BID for migraine prophylaxis.

Cognitive slowing and word-finding trouble led to the nickname "Dopamax". Other effects include tingling, kidney stones, metabolic acidosis and, rarely, acute angle-closure glaucoma. Topiramate taken in pregnancy increases the risk of cleft lip and palate, and doses above 200 mg daily reduce contraceptive effectiveness.
