1. Tender loving care

Writing & Everyday · Everyday Abbreviations

Describes gentle, attentive care given to a person, animal or object that needs special attention, from a convalescing patient to a run-down house. Real estate ads use "needs TLC" to signal that repairs are required.

Example: The 1920s bungalow needs some TLC, but the price reflects it and the lot is huge.

In property listings, "needs TLC" can mean anything from cosmetic work to major structural repairs, so buyers should inspect carefully. The initials also name the US cable channel TLC, originally The Learning Channel, and the R&B group TLC, whose name came from its members' nicknames T-Boz, Left Eye and Chilli.

2. Thin-layer chromatography

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Quick, inexpensive separation method in which a spot of sample on a plate coated with silica gel is developed with a solvent that creeps up the plate by capillary action. Organic chemists use TLC constantly to check whether a reaction has finished and to choose solvents for column purification.

Example: TLC (30% ethyl acetate in hexanes) showed complete consumption of the starting material after two hours.

Spots are usually seen under a UV lamp or after staining with reagents such as potassium permanganate, iodine or ninhydrin. Each compound's position is expressed as its retention factor, Rf, the distance it traveled divided by the distance of the solvent front. Outside the lab, TLC is informal shorthand for "tender loving care."

3. The Learning Channel

Organizations & Companies · Media and Broadcasting Abbreviations

American cable channel originally devoted to educational programming that now focuses on reality series about families and relationships, such as 90 Day Fiance and Say Yes to the Dress. Owned by Warner Bros. Discovery.

Example: My mom watches back-to-back episodes of 90 Day Fiance on TLC.

Founded in 1972 as the Appalachian Community Service Network by the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare and NASA, it became The Learning Channel in 1980. Discovery Communications bought it in 1991. The shift to reality shows in the 2000s made "TLC" a common example of channel drift.

4. Total lung capacity

Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations

Volume of air in the lungs after the deepest possible breath in, normally about 6 liters in an average adult man. Measured by body plethysmography or gas dilution, it is the defining test for restrictive lung disease.

Example: TLC 64% predicted with proportional reduction in FVC: moderate restriction.

A TLC below the lower limit of normal (roughly 80 percent predicted) confirms restriction, because spirometry alone can only suggest it. An elevated TLC indicates hyperinflation, typical of emphysema. Body plethysmography ("body box") measures trapped gas that dilution methods miss. In everyday English TLC means tender loving care.

5. Triple-level cell

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

NAND flash memory that stores three bits per cell, the mainstream choice for consumer SSDs, phones and memory cards because it combines good speed with moderate cost. Endurance is typically one to three thousand program/erase cycles.

Example: For a gaming PC, a TLC NVMe drive with a DRAM cache is the safe choice.

Samsung's 840 (2012) was the first widely sold SSD built on TLC flash. Eight distinct voltage levels per cell make it slower and less durable than SLC or MLC, but controllers compensate with caching and error correction. Buyers often prefer TLC over QLC for drives that receive heavy, sustained writes. Outside storage, TLC means tender loving care.
