1. Salt Lake City

Geography & Places · City and Neighborhood Abbreviations

Capital of Utah and headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847. Salt Lake City hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics and was awarded the 2034 Winter Games.

Example: Ski resorts are less than an hour's drive from downtown SLC.

SLC is also the airport code. The Great Salt Lake, northwest of the city, is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere. The city's street grid is numbered outward from Temple Square.

2. Salt Lake City International Airport

Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations

Delta Air Lines' Mountain West hub and the main airport of Utah, located about 4 miles west of downtown Salt Lake City. Its new terminal, opened in 2020, was the first new hub airport terminal complex built in the US in the 21st century.

Example: SLC's new concourse is so long that a moving walkway is the only way to make a tight connection.

ICAO code KSLC. The $4-billion-plus rebuild, completed in phases from September 2020, replaced terminals dating to the 1960s. A 360-foot sculpture called "The Canyon" lines the arrival area. Proximity to ski resorts makes it a major winter-sports gateway.

3. Single-level cell

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

NAND flash memory that stores one bit per cell, offering the highest speed and endurance, often rated around 100,000 program/erase cycles, at the highest cost per gigabyte. It is used in industrial and some enterprise storage.

Example: The industrial controller uses SLC flash because it must survive constant logging for 15 years.

Consumer SSDs mostly use TLC or QLC flash but run part of it in SLC mode as a fast "SLC cache"; once that cache fills during a big transfer, write speeds drop sharply. Fewer voltage states per cell make SLC easier to read reliably at extreme temperatures. Pure SLC drives are now rare and expensive outside specialized markets.
