Stands forNOT-AND (NAND flash memory)
CategoriesTechnology & Computing

NAND stands for NOT-AND (NAND flash memory), a computer hardware abbreviation.

Type of non-volatile flash memory used in SSDs, USB drives, memory cards and phone storage, named after the NAND logic gate that its series-connected memory cells resemble. It stores data in blocks that must be erased before rewriting.

Example: Prices for SSDs dropped as manufacturers moved to 3D NAND with more than 200 layers.

Usage notes

Fujio Masuoka's team at Toshiba developed NAND flash and presented it in 1987. Modern 3D NAND stacks memory cells vertically in hundreds of layers; Samsung introduced its V-NAND in 2013. Cells store one to four bits each (SLC to QLC), trading endurance for density. NOR flash, the other main type, is used for firmware chips that need fast random reads.
