microSD stands for Micro Secure Digital, a computer hardware abbreviation.
Tiny memory card, 15 by 11 mm, used in smartphones, the Nintendo Switch, drones, dash cams and action cameras. Adapters let microSD cards fit full-size SD slots.
Example: The Switch 2 only accepts microSD Express cards for storing games.
Usage notes
The format began as SanDisk's TransFlash in 2004 and was adopted by the SD Association in 2005. Like full-size cards, it comes in microSDHC and microSDXC capacity classes, with A1 and A2 marks for app performance. microSD Express cards use a PCIe and NVMe interface for SSD-like speeds. Many flagship phones have dropped microSD slots in favor of fixed storage.
