1. LaGuardia Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
New York City's closest major airport to Manhattan, located in northern Queens on Flushing Bay and served mainly by short and medium-haul domestic flights. Delta and American are its largest carriers.
Example: Taking the M60 bus to LGA because the cab line is an hour long.
ICAO code KLGA. Opened in 1939 and named for Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who campaigned for an airport within city limits. A perimeter rule bars most nonstop flights longer than 1,500 miles, with exceptions such as Denver. The airport was rebuilt for about $8 billion, with new terminals opening between 2018 and 2022. US Airways Flight 1549 took off from LaGuardia before ditching in the Hudson in 2009.
2. Large for gestational age
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Birth weight above the 90th percentile for gestational age, often associated with maternal diabetes, obesity and excessive weight gain in pregnancy. LGA babies face higher risks of birth injury, shoulder dystocia and low blood sugar.
Example: LGA infant, 4,620 g, mother with GDM; monitor glucose every 3 hours.
Macrosomia, an absolute birth weight above 4,000 or 4,500 g, is related but not the same as LGA. Suspected large babies may lead to discussion of cesarean delivery, especially in diabetic pregnancies with estimated weight above 4,500 g. LGA infants are at greater risk of childhood obesity.
3. Local Government Area
Geography & Places · Region Abbreviations
Basic unit of local government in Australia and Nigeria. Australia has more than 500 LGAs, called councils, shires or cities, while Nigeria's constitution lists 774.
Example: COVID restrictions in Sydney were applied LGA by LGA in 2021.
LGA is also the code for LaGuardia Airport in New York. In Australian news, residents often refer to their council area as their LGA.
4. Land grid array
Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations
Processor socket design in which flat contact pads on the bottom of the CPU press against spring pins in the motherboard socket. Intel desktop processors since 2004 and AMD's AM5 platform (2022) use LGA sockets.
Example: Be careful installing the CPU: bent pins in an LGA socket mean replacing the motherboard.
Sockets are named by pin count, as in LGA 775, LGA 1700 and LGA 1851 for Intel and LGA 1718 for AMD's AM5. Moving the pins to the board lets the CPU package be sturdier, but damaged socket pins are harder to fix than bent CPU pins. Server processors such as AMD EPYC use very large LGA sockets with thousands of contacts.
