CategoriesMedical

LEEP stands for Loop electrosurgical excision procedure, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Outpatient treatment for high-grade cervical precancer in which a thin wire loop carrying electrical current removes the transformation zone of the cervix. It provides tissue for pathology while treating the abnormal cells.

Example: HSIL on colposcopic biopsy (CIN 3); LEEP under local anesthesia, margins negative.

Usage notes

In the UK the same procedure is called LLETZ (large loop excision of the transformation zone). LEEP slightly increases the risk of preterm birth in later pregnancies, so very young women with CIN 2 may be observed instead. Follow-up includes HPV testing. Pronounced "leep".
