1. Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
Medical · Obstetrics & Gynecology Abbreviations
Precancerous changes in the cervix found on biopsy, graded 1 (mild), 2 (moderate) or 3 (severe, including carcinoma in situ) by how much of the lining is abnormal. CIN 2 and 3 are usually treated to prevent invasive cancer, while CIN 1 often regresses.
Example: Colposcopic biopsy: CIN 3; LEEP scheduled in 2 weeks.
The term was introduced by pathologist Ralph Richart in 1967. Nearly all CIN is caused by persistent high-risk HPV infection. Pathology reports increasingly use the two-tier LSIL/HSIL terminology for biopsies as well. In nephrology CIN means contrast-induced nephropathy.
2. Contrast-induced nephropathy
Medical · Medical Imaging Abbreviations
Acute decline in kidney function after intravenous or intra-arterial iodinated contrast, usually defined as a creatinine rise of at least 0.3 mg/dL or 50 percent within 48 to 72 hours. Risk is concentrated in patients with severe pre-existing kidney disease, especially after arterial injections.
Example: eGFR 24: CIN risk discussed and IV hydration ordered before the CTA.
Many experts now prefer "contrast-associated acute kidney injury", because studies with matched controls found that much of the creatinine rise seen after CT is not caused by contrast. Joint ACR and National Kidney Foundation guidance (2020) suggests preventive IV fluids mainly when eGFR is below 30. In gynecologic pathology CIN means cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.
