1. Bilateral tubal ligation

Permanent contraception in which both fallopian tubes are cut, tied, clipped, cauterized or removed so eggs cannot meet sperm. It is often done during a cesarean or shortly after vaginal birth, or laparoscopically at other times.
Example: Desires permanent contraception; postpartum BTL by partial salpingectomy, consent signed 30 days ago.
Complete removal of the tubes (bilateral salpingectomy) is increasingly preferred because it is more effective and may reduce ovarian cancer risk. Federal rules for Medicaid require a consent form signed at least 30 days before sterilization. Reversal is possible but not reliable. Popularly called "getting your tubes tied".
