BPP stands for Biophysical profile, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Ultrasound-based fetal assessment scoring five components, each worth 2 points: nonstress test, fetal breathing movements, body movements, muscle tone and amniotic fluid volume. A score of 8 or 10 is reassuring, while 4 or less suggests the baby may need delivery.

Example: BPP 8/8 on ultrasound, NST not required; repeat in 1 week.

Usage notes

Developed by Frank Manning and colleagues in 1980. The modified BPP, combining a nonstress test with amniotic fluid assessment, is a quicker common alternative. Low amniotic fluid lowers the score and may prompt delivery regardless of other components.
