1. Consumer Electronics Show

Technology & Computing · Consumer Electronics Abbreviations

Major annual technology trade show held in Las Vegas each January, where manufacturers unveil TVs, laptops, cars, smart-home gadgets and concept devices. It is organized by the Consumer Technology Association.

Example: Every TV maker announced brighter OLED panels at CES this year.

The first show took place in New York in June 1967. Products introduced at CES include the VCR (1970), the CD player (1981) and Microsoft's Xbox (2001). Organizers now use "CES" as the official name rather than its original expansion, reflecting a scope far beyond traditional consumer electronics. The show is open to industry professionals and media, not the general public.

2. Cauda equina syndrome

Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations

Surgical emergency caused by compression of the bundle of lumbar and sacral nerve roots below the spinal cord, most often by a large central disc herniation. Warning signs include numbness in the saddle area, urinary retention or incontinence, bowel dysfunction and leg weakness.

Example: New urinary retention, saddle anesthesia and bilateral sciatica: suspected CES, emergency MRI.

"Cauda equina" is Latin for horse's tail, describing the nerve roots' appearance. Urgent MRI and decompression, ideally within about 48 hours of onset, improve the chance of recovering bladder function. Patients with sciatica are counseled to seek immediate care for red-flag symptoms. Delayed diagnosis is a frequent cause of litigation.

3. Customer effort score

Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations

Survey metric asking how easy it was for a customer to get an issue resolved or task completed, based on the finding that reducing effort builds loyalty more than delighting customers.

Example: After we added order tracking to the app, CES improved by 15%.

Introduced by the Corporate Executive Board in the 2010 Harvard Business Review article "Stop Trying to Delight Your Customers." In technology, CES is better known as the Consumer Electronics Show held each January in Las Vegas.
