CRPS stands for Complex regional pain syndrome, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.
Chronic pain condition, usually in an arm or leg after a fracture, surgery or other injury, with pain far out of proportion to the original event, plus swelling, color and temperature changes, sweating abnormalities and stiffness. Early recognition and rehabilitation improve outcomes.
Example: CRPS type I of right hand after distal radius fracture, Budapest criteria met; start graded motor imagery.
Usage notes
Type I, formerly reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD), occurs without a defined nerve injury; type II, formerly causalgia, follows a specific nerve injury. Diagnosis uses the Budapest criteria. Treatments include physical and occupational therapy, desensitization, medications and nerve blocks. Pronounced as letters.
