DJD stands for Degenerative joint disease, a musculoskeletal & rheumatology abbreviation.
Older synonym for osteoarthritis, still common in radiology reports, problem lists and billing. It describes cartilage loss, bone spurs and joint space narrowing, often written for the spine (facet DJD) as well as knees and hips.
Example: X-ray: moderate DJD of the right hip with superior joint space narrowing and osteophytes.
Usage notes
Rheumatologists generally prefer "osteoarthritis" because the condition involves active joint processes and inflammation, not just passive degeneration. Pronounced as letters. "Arthrosis" is the equivalent term in many European languages. The term carries no specific severity grade.
