1. Frequency modulation
Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations · also used in science
Method of transmitting audio by varying the frequency of a radio carrier wave, giving clearer, less noisy sound than AM. FM broadcast radio uses roughly 88 to 108 MHz in most countries.
Example: Tune the car radio to 101.1 FM for the traffic report.
Inventor Edwin Howard Armstrong patented wideband FM in 1933. FM stereo broadcasting began in the United States in 1961. Its line-of-sight range is typically under about 100 km, much shorter than AM at night. Norway became the first country to switch off national FM radio, in 2017, moving to digital DAB. Japan uses a lower FM band starting at 76 MHz.
2. Family medicine
Medical · Medical Specialty Abbreviations
Primary care specialty treating patients of all ages and both sexes, covering preventive care, chronic disease management, minor procedures, pediatrics, women's health and sometimes obstetrics. Training is a three-year residency, with certification by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Example: FM clinic manages her diabetes, her husband's hypertension and their children's well-child visits.
Family practice was recognized as a specialty in 1969, when the American Board of Family Practice was founded; the board took its current name in 2005. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) represents the field. Family physicians provide a large share of care in rural America. In broadcasting, FM means frequency modulation.
3. Fibromyalgia
Medical · Musculoskeletal & Rheumatology Abbreviations
Chronic condition of widespread pain with fatigue, unrefreshing sleep and cognitive symptoms ("fibro fog"), thought to involve altered pain processing in the nervous system rather than tissue damage. It affects roughly 2–4 percent of people, more often women.
Example: FM by 2016 criteria, widespread pain index 11; start graded aerobic exercise and duloxetine.
The 1990 ACR criteria relied on tender points, which later criteria dropped in favor of a widespread pain index and symptom severity scale. The FDA approved pregabalin, duloxetine and milnacipran for fibromyalgia between 2007 and 2009. Regular exercise is the most consistently effective treatment. Also written FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome).
4. First Minister
Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations
Head of a devolved government in the UK: the First Minister of Scotland, the First Minister of Wales, and in Northern Ireland the First Minister, who shares an office of equal power with the deputy First Minister under the power-sharing rules.
Example: The FM announced a review of the ferry contract at Holyrood.
The posts date from devolution in 1999, though Wales used the title First Secretary until 2000. In Northern Ireland the two posts are held by the largest unionist and nationalist parties; in 2024 Sinn Féin's Michelle O'Neill became the first nationalist First Minister. In radio, FM means frequency modulation.
5. Foreign Minister
Government & Politics · World Government Abbreviations
Cabinet minister responsible for a country's foreign relations, usually heading the ministry of foreign affairs. The equivalent post is called Secretary of State in the US and Foreign Secretary in the UK.
Example: The two FMs met on the sidelines of the summit to discuss a ceasefire.
Foreign ministers of groups such as the G7 and ASEAN meet regularly between leaders' summits. In UK devolved government, FM means First Minister, and in radio it means frequency modulation, so context decides the meaning.
6. Farm to Market Road
Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations · also used in geography
Texas state highway designation for rural secondary roads built to connect farms and ranches to towns and markets, written as FM followed by a number, such as FM 1960 near Houston. Texas has thousands of FM and Ranch to Market (RM) routes.
Example: Take FM 2222 west toward the lake to skip the traffic on the highway.
The system grew rapidly after the 1949 Colson-Briscoe Act funded rural roads. Some FM roads have become busy suburban arterials while keeping their rural names. Ranch to Market roads, written RM, serve the Hill Country and west Texas. In radio, FM means frequency modulation, an unrelated meaning.
7. Micronesia
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
The Federated States of Micronesia, a Pacific nation of four states in free association with the United States, use FM, and the USPS also uses it as a state-style code for mail. Palikir is the capital.
Example: Radio stations and podcasts favor .fm addresses, although the domain belongs to Micronesia.
The .fm domain earns licensing revenue from broadcasters and music services. In writing, the country is usually FSM. FM also means frequency modulation and, in Texas, Farm to Market Road.
8. Foundation model
Technology & Computing · Artificial Intelligence Abbreviations
A large AI model trained on broad data at scale that can be adapted to many downstream tasks, such as GPT-4, Claude or Stable Diffusion. Companies build products by prompting or fine-tuning foundation models rather than training from scratch.
Example: Amazon Bedrock lets customers choose an FM from several providers through one API.
Introduced in 2021 by Stanford's Center for Research on Foundation Models in the report "On the Opportunities and Risks of Foundation Models". The term stresses that one model becomes the base for many applications, passing on its biases and flaws. The EU AI Act uses the related term "general-purpose AI model". In radio, FM means frequency modulation.
9. Field Marshal
Military · British Military Rank Abbreviations
Highest rank of the British Army, a five-star rank (NATO OF-10) symbolized by a baton. Routine promotion to field marshal ended in the mid-1990s, and the rank is now honorary, held by the monarch and a few senior royals and former chiefs.
Example: The Duke of Wellington became a FM in 1813 after his victory at Vitoria.
Equivalent five-star ranks are admiral of the fleet in the Royal Navy and marshal of the Royal Air Force. Many armies use field marshal, but the United States never has; its nearest equivalent was General of the Army. In radio, FM means frequency modulation, the usual sense of the letters.
10. Fermium (Fm)
Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations
Fermium (atomic number 100) is the heaviest element that can be built up by neutron capture in a reactor; beyond it, very short-lived isotopes block further neutron capture. It has been made only in microscopic quantities and has no uses outside basic research.
Example: Only trace quantities of Fm have ever been produced, far too little to see with the naked eye.
Fermium was identified alongside einsteinium in debris from the 1952 Ivy Mike test by Albert Ghiorso's team, and the discovery was declassified in 1955. It honors Enrico Fermi, whose team built the first nuclear reactor, Chicago Pile-1, in 1942. Fermi died in November 1954, shortly before the name was made public.
