FDA stands for U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Regulates the safety and effectiveness of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vaccines, medical devices, most foods, cosmetics, tobacco products and animal drugs. The HHS agency must approve new drugs before sale and is led by the Commissioner of Food and Drugs.
Example: The drug received FDA approval in March for adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.
Usage notes
Its roots are the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906; the agency took the FDA name in 1930, and the 1938 Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act required proof of drug safety before marketing. Meat, poultry and processed eggs are inspected by USDA's FSIS instead. Authority over tobacco products was added in 2009.
