1. United States Environmental Protection Agency
Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations
Writes and enforces national rules on air and water pollution, drinking water, pesticides, toxic chemicals and hazardous waste, and oversees cleanup of contaminated Superfund sites. The independent agency is led by an Administrator and operates 10 regional offices.
Example: The EPA fuel economy label lists 34 mpg on the highway for the base model.
President Richard Nixon created the EPA by reorganization plan in December 1970, months after the first Earth Day. Its authority comes from laws such as the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, and states often run permitting programs under EPA delegation. In employment law EPA can also mean the Equal Pay Act.
2. Equal Pay Act of 1963
Government & Politics · US Law Abbreviations
Amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act that requires employers to pay men and women equally for substantially equal work performed under similar conditions in the same establishment. Pay differences are allowed only for seniority, merit, quantity or quality of production or factors other than sex.
Example: Her lawsuit alleges violations of the EPA and Title VII over a $14,000 pay gap.
President John F. Kennedy signed it on June 10, 1963, one of the first federal laws addressing sex discrimination. Unlike Title VII, it does not require filing with the EEOC first. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 changed filing deadlines for pay claims under Title VII. More commonly, EPA means the Environmental Protection Agency.
3. Expected points added
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Advanced football metric measuring how much a play changes a team's expected points, based on down, distance, field position and time remaining. EPA per play is widely used to rank offenses, defenses and quarterbacks.
Example: The offense averaged 0.18 EPA per play, third-best in the league.
Expected-points models trace to a 1971 paper by quarterback Virgil Carter and Robert Machol and became popular with public play-by-play data in the 2010s. Outside sports, EPA most often means the US Environmental Protection Agency.
4. Enduring power of attorney
Law & Legal · Estate and Family Law Abbreviations
Document under English law, also used in some Commonwealth jurisdictions, giving an attorney power over the donor's property and finances that continues if the donor becomes mentally incapable. No new EPAs could be made in England and Wales after September 30, 2007.
Example: Her late father's EPA, signed in 2004, had to be registered once his dementia set in.
An EPA made before October 2007 remains valid but must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian once the donor is becoming mentally incapable. EPAs cover only property and financial affairs, not health decisions. In the US, EPA overwhelmingly means the Environmental Protection Agency.
