1. U.S. Energy Information Administration
Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations
Independent statistical agency within the Department of Energy that publishes data and forecasts on oil, natural gas, coal, electricity and renewables, including weekly petroleum inventories and gasoline prices. Its Short-Term Energy Outlook and Annual Energy Outlook are standard references.
Example: Crude fell after the EIA reported a larger-than-expected build in US inventories.
Created in 1977, EIA has statutory independence: its data and analyses do not need approval from other government officials. It is led by an Administrator. In environmental law, EIA instead means environmental impact assessment, the international counterpart of a US environmental impact statement.
2. Environmental impact assessment
Science & Engineering · Environmental Abbreviations
Formal process for identifying and evaluating the likely environmental effects of a proposed project, such as a highway, mine, dam or wind farm, before a decision is made. EIAs typically involve screening, scoping, impact analysis, mitigation measures and public consultation.
Example: The port expansion cannot proceed until the EIA has been reviewed and approved by the ministry.
The US National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 created the first EIA requirement, and the European Union adopted its EIA Directive in 1985; most countries now require such assessments. In energy statistics EIA often refers to the US Energy Information Administration, an unrelated government agency.
