1. External auditory canal

Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations

Passage from the outer ear to the eardrum, about 2.5 cm long in adults and lined by skin that produces cerumen (earwax). It is the site of swimmer's ear (otitis externa), wax impaction and foreign bodies.

Example: Edematous EAC with debris and tragal tenderness: otitis externa, antibiotic-steroid drops.

The outer third of the canal is cartilage and the inner two-thirds bone, which is why manipulation hurts when the canal is inflamed. Cotton swabs push wax deeper and can perforate the eardrum. Malignant otitis externa, a bone infection spreading from the canal, occurs mainly in older people with diabetes.

2. U.S. Election Assistance Commission

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

Independent bipartisan commission that certifies voting systems against the federal Voluntary Voting System Guidelines, distributes election security grants and maintains the national mail voter registration form. It has four commissioners.

Example: The county will only buy equipment certified by the EAC under the latest guidelines.

The Help America Vote Act of 2002 established it after the disputed 2000 presidential election. It does not run elections, which are administered by states and localities, and has no enforcement power over them. Its Election Administration and Voting Survey is a key source of national election data.

3. Estimate at completion

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Forecast of a project's total cost at completion based on performance so far; a common formula divides the budget at completion by the cost performance index.

Example: At the current CPI, the EAC is $1.45 million on a $1.2 million budget.

Other EAC formulas assume future work will go to plan (AC plus remaining budget) or factor in both cost and schedule indexes. The difference between BAC and EAC is the variance at completion (VAC).

4. East African Community

Organizations & Companies · International Organization Abbreviations

Regional intergovernmental organization of eight East African countries, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, with a customs union and common market and a long-term goal of political federation.

Example: Goods can move duty-free within the EAC customs union.

A first East African Community existed from 1967 to 1977; the current one was revived in 2000. Membership expanded with South Sudan in 2016, the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2022 and Somalia in 2024. In US election administration, EAC means the Election Assistance Commission.
