EJ stands for External jugular (vein), an anatomy abbreviation.

Superficial neck vein that crosses the sternocleidomastoid muscle and is often visible under the skin. It serves as a peripheral IV site in emergencies when arm veins cannot be accessed.

Example: Unable to obtain arm access; 18-gauge EJ placed.

Usage notes

An EJ line counts as a peripheral IV, not a central line, even though it lies close to central veins. Distended external jugular veins can hint at raised venous pressure but are less reliable than internal jugular pulsations. The vein becomes prominent when people strain, sing or lie flat.
