FERC stands for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Independent commission within the Department of Energy that regulates interstate electricity transmission and wholesale power sales, interstate natural gas pipelines and LNG terminals, oil pipeline rates and nonfederal hydropower dams. It has up to five commissioners, one serving as chair.
Example: The pipeline cannot begin construction until FERC issues its certificate.
Usage notes
FERC succeeded the Federal Power Commission, founded in 1920, when the Energy Department was organized in 1977. No more than three commissioners may belong to the same political party. Retail electricity rates paid by households are set by state utility commissions, not FERC.
