1. Federal Communications Commission

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

Licenses broadcast stations and radio spectrum, auctions wireless frequencies and regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The independent commission is run by five commissioners appointed by the President.

Example: The FCC ID printed on the router lets you look up its test reports and internal photos.

The Communications Act of 1934 created the FCC to replace the Federal Radio Commission. Nearly every electronic device sold in the US that emits radio frequencies needs FCC authorization, which is why its logo or ID appears on product labels. Its broadcast indecency rules apply to over-the-air stations but not to cable or streaming services.

2. Future Circular Collider

Science & Engineering · Physics Abbreviations

Proposed successor to the Large Hadron Collider, a ring of about 91 kilometers around Geneva. CERN's plan envisions first an electron-positron collider to study the Higgs boson in detail and later a proton collider reaching energies several times higher than the LHC.

Example: The FCC's ring would be more than three times the circumference of the LHC's 27-kilometer tunnel.

CERN's member states are expected to decide later this decade whether to proceed. Critics argue the cost is hard to justify without a clear target for discovery, while supporters cite the precision Higgs measurements it would allow. China has proposed a similar machine, the CEPC.
