Fed stands for Federal Reserve, a US federal agency abbreviation.
The central bank of the United States, which sets monetary policy to pursue maximum employment and stable prices, supervises banks, operates payment systems and acts as lender of last resort. It consists of the Board of Governors in Washington and 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks.
Example: Mortgage rates dipped after the Fed signaled it would cut rates at its next meeting.
Usage notes
The Federal Reserve Act of 1913, signed by President Woodrow Wilson after a series of banking panics, established it. The Fed targets 2 percent inflation as measured by the PCE price index. Its independence from political control over interest rates has been a recurring subject of debate, including public pressure from presidents.
