FHFA stands for Federal Housing Finance Agency, a US federal agency abbreviation.

Regulates Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and the 11 Federal Home Loan Banks and has served as conservator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac since 2008. It sets the annual conforming loan limit and publishes the FHFA House Price Index.

Example: The FHFA raised the conforming loan limit for single-family homes again this year.

Usage notes

It was born in the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008, weeks before it placed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into conservatorship during the financial crisis. It is led by a single Director, and a 2021 Supreme Court decision held that the President may remove the Director at will. Releasing the two companies from conservatorship has been debated for years.
