1. Frankfurt Airport

Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations

Germany's busiest airport and the main hub of Lufthansa, located about 12 kilometers southwest of Frankfurt am Main. Long-distance and regional train stations are built into the airport, connecting it to the German rail network.

Example: Lufthansa rebooked us via FRA, but the connection from Z gates to A gates took 40 minutes.

ICAO code EDDF. With tens of thousands of employees, it is often described as Germany's largest single workplace. A court-ordered night flight ban has applied from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. since 2011. The airport also handles more air cargo than any other airport in Germany.

2. Full retirement age

Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations · also used in government

Age at which a US worker can claim the full, unreduced Social Security retirement benefit: 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later. Claiming as early as 62 permanently reduces the monthly check, while waiting past FRA earns delayed retirement credits up to age 70.

Example: My FRA is 67, but I plan to wait until 70 for a check that's 24% bigger.

Also called normal retirement age. The 1983 Social Security amendments raised it gradually from 65. Delayed retirement credits add 8% per year for people born in 1943 or later. Before reaching FRA, an earnings test temporarily withholds benefits from those who keep working above an annual income threshold.

3. Federal Railroad Administration

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

Writes and enforces rail safety regulations, inspects track and equipment and funds passenger and freight rail projects, including grants to Amtrak. The DOT agency is headed by an Administrator.

Example: FRA investigators are examining the broken rail that caused the derailment.

Formed together with DOT in 1967, FRA regulates railroad operations, while the separate National Transportation Safety Board independently investigates major accidents. Positive train control, collision-avoidance technology mandated after a 2008 crash in California, was implemented under FRA oversight. In retirement planning FRA means full retirement age.

4. Forward rate agreement

Business & Finance · Bond & Fixed-Income Abbreviations

Over-the-counter contract that locks in an interest rate for a future period on a notional amount, settled in cash at the start of that period based on the difference between the agreed rate and the reference rate. Banks and companies use FRAs to hedge short-term rate risk.

Example: The treasurer bought a 3x6 FRA to fix the rate on a three-month loan starting in three months.

An FRA quoted as 3x6 covers the period starting in three months and ending in six. The FRA market shrank as LIBOR was phased out, with much activity moving to futures and OIS. In US retirement planning, FRA means full retirement age.
