FinCEN stands for Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Fights money laundering and terrorist financing by administering the Bank Secrecy Act for the Treasury Department. It collects suspicious activity reports and currency transaction reports, which banks file for cash transactions over $10,000, and shares the data with law enforcement.
Example: Casinos must file a FinCEN currency transaction report whenever a customer cashes out more than $10,000.
Usage notes
Created in 1990, it is a financial intelligence unit rather than a police agency, supporting investigations by the FBI, IRS and other agencies. The mixed capitalization FinCEN is official. It also administers beneficial-ownership reporting under the Corporate Transparency Act, which a March 2025 interim rule narrowed to foreign companies.
