FHWA stands for Federal Highway Administration, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Distributes federal-aid highway funds to the states, sets design and signing standards, including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and oversees the Interstate Highway System. This DOT agency is led by an Administrator.
Example: The interchange project qualifies for FHWA funding because it is on the National Highway System.
Usage notes
Its predecessor, the Office of Road Inquiry, was created in 1893; the agency took the FHWA name when DOT was formed in 1967. Most highway money comes from the Highway Trust Fund, financed largely by the federal gas tax of 18.4 cents a gallon, unchanged since 1993. States, not FHWA, own and build most roads.
