FBD stands for Free-body diagram, a physics abbreviation.
Sketch that isolates a single object and shows every force acting on it as an arrow, such as gravity, normal force, tension and friction. Drawing an FBD is the standard first step in solving mechanics problems with Newton's second law.
Example: Draw an FBD for the block on the incline before writing the equations.
Usage notes
Only external forces on the chosen body belong in the diagram; forces it exerts on other objects are left out. Engineers use the same technique to analyze trusses and beams. Students commonly forget the normal force or add a nonexistent "force of motion."
