CERN stands for European Organization for Nuclear Research, a physics abbreviation also used in organizations.
International particle physics laboratory founded in 1954, straddling the French-Swiss border near Geneva. CERN operates the Large Hadron Collider and the accelerators that feed it, hosts thousands of visiting scientists, and is where the Higgs boson was discovered and the World Wide Web was invented.
Example: CERN announced the discovery of a Higgs-like particle on July 4, 2012.
Usage notes
The acronym comes from the French name of the provisional body that created it, the Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire; it was kept when the permanent organization was established. Tim Berners-Lee proposed the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989, and the first website went live there. CERN's experiments discovered the W and Z bosons in 1983.
