1. Comprehensive metabolic panel
Medical · Laboratory Test Abbreviations
Fourteen-test chemistry panel combining the eight BMP tests with albumin, total protein, alkaline phosphatase, ALT, AST and total bilirubin. It provides a broad snapshot of kidney and liver function, electrolytes, glucose and protein status and is a staple of annual physicals, hospital admission labs and medication safety monitoring.
Example: Annual physical labs: CMP, lipid panel and A1C, fasting after midnight.
Billed under CPT 80053. Older labels such as Chem 14 or SMA come from the Sequential Multiple Analyzer instruments that automated chemistry testing in the 1960s and 1970s. Despite its name, the panel leaves out magnesium, phosphorus, GGT, lipids and thyroid tests, which must be ordered separately. An abnormal liver result on a CMP is usually followed by a dedicated hepatic function panel.
2. Condensed matter physics
Science & Engineering · Physics Abbreviations
Largest branch of physics, studying the properties of solids and liquids that arise from many interacting particles, including superconductivity, magnetism, semiconductors and exotic phases such as topological insulators. Its discoveries underlie transistors, lasers, hard drives and MRI magnets.
Example: Graphene research earned the 2010 Nobel Prize, a landmark for CMP.
Philip Anderson popularized the term "condensed matter" in the late 1960s, broadening the older name solid-state physics. The American Physical Society's condensed matter division is its largest. Anderson's 1972 essay "More Is Different" argued that new laws emerge at each level of complexity.
3. Completions
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Number of forward passes caught by a receiver, a basic quarterback statistic shown next to attempts in box scores. Completion percentage is completions divided by attempts.
Example: Box score: Burrow, CMP 31, ATT 40, YDS 348, TD 3.
Also abbreviated COMP or C (as in C/ATT). An NFL catch requires control of the ball and two feet, or another body part, down in bounds; college football requires only one foot. Completion percentages above 65 became ordinary as rules increasingly favored passing in the 2000s and 2010s.
4. Certified Meeting Professional
Education & Academia · Professional Certification Abbreviations
Event-planning credential awarded by the Events Industry Council, requiring experience, continuing education and a passing exam on planning, site selection, contracts, budgeting and risk management.
Example: The association hired a CMP to plan its 6,000-attendee annual convention.
First awarded in 1985, the CMP is recognized internationally in the meetings and events industry. Holders recertify every five years. A higher designation for senior leaders, the CMP-HC focuses on health care meetings.
