CategoriesMedical

GGT stands for Gamma-glutamyl transferase, a laboratory test abbreviation.

Liver and biliary enzyme that rises with bile duct obstruction, cholestasis, alcohol use and enzyme-inducing drugs such as phenytoin and carbamazepine. Its main use is confirming that a raised alkaline phosphatase comes from the liver rather than bone, and it serves as a supportive marker of heavy drinking.

Example: GGT 312 with ALP 280; MRCP ordered to look for a duct stone.

Usage notes

Also written GGTP or gamma-GT. GGT is highly sensitive but not specific, and it rises with obesity, fatty liver and diabetes. After heavy drinking stops, levels fall gradually over several weeks, which programs sometimes use to support abstinence. Bone disease does not raise GGT.
