hCG stands for Human chorionic gonadotropin, a laboratory test abbreviation.
Hormone produced by the placenta's trophoblast cells soon after implantation and detected by all pregnancy tests. Quantitative serum levels track early pregnancy: in a viable intrauterine pregnancy hCG typically rises by at least about 35 to 50 percent every 48 hours, while slow rises or falls suggest ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
Example: Serum hCG 1,840 today versus 1,120 two days ago; repeat ultrasound Friday.
Usage notes
Often written beta-hCG because assays target the beta subunit, which is unique to hCG, while the alpha subunit is shared with LH, FSH and TSH. hCG is also a tumor marker for testicular germ cell tumors and gestational trophoblastic disease, and an injection of hCG triggers ovulation in fertility treatment. It is banned in men's sport because it stimulates testosterone production.
