1. Lufthansa

Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations

Germany's largest airline and flag carrier, with hubs in Frankfurt and Munich, and a founding member of Star Alliance in 1997. The Lufthansa Group also owns Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings and holds a stake in ITA Airways.

Example: Lufthansa LH 400 from Frankfurt to JFK is the airline's longtime transatlantic flagship flight.

ICAO code DLH; callsign "Lufthansa." The original Deutsche Luft Hansa was founded in 1926 and dissolved after World War II; the current company was established in 1953 and resumed flights in 1955. Its crane logo dates back to 1918. The name combines "Luft" (air) and "Hansa," recalling the medieval Hanseatic trading league.

2. Luteinizing hormone

Medical · Endocrinology & Diabetes Abbreviations

Released by the anterior pituitary, this hormone triggers ovulation in women through a mid-cycle surge and stimulates testosterone production in men. Home ovulation predictor kits detect the LH surge in urine, usually 24–36 hours before ovulation.

Example: LH surge on home kit day 13; timed intercourse days 13–15.

An elevated LH-to-FSH ratio is common in PCOS but is not part of diagnostic criteria. Low LH with low testosterone points to secondary (pituitary or hypothalamic) hypogonadism. GnRH agonists used in prostate cancer and IVF work by initially surging and then suppressing LH.

3. Lighthearted (tone indicator) (/lh)

Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations

Tone tag signaling that a message is playful or lighthearted, usually to soften teasing, mock complaints or exaggerated praise so the reader does not take offense.

Example: You're so annoying for being this talented at everything /lh

Common in friendly teasing between online friends and in fandom spaces. Unlike /j (joking), it implies the statement is not entirely false, only gentle in tone. Rarely used outside Gen Z communities.

4. Leading Hand

Military · British Military Rank Abbreviations

Royal Navy junior rate at NATO grade OR-4, officially called a leading rate, equivalent to a corporal. Leading hands supervise junior sailors in their department and take charge of mess decks and work parties.

Example: LH Carter took charge of the working party loading stores onto the ship.

Leading hands are nicknamed "killicks," after the anchor badge they wear on the arm; killick is an old word for a small anchor. The next step is petty officer (OR-6), since the Royal Navy has no OR-5 rank.
