1. Mississippi

Geography & Places · US State Abbreviations

Named for the river that forms most of its western border, the Magnolia State became the 20th state on December 10, 1817. Jackson is the capital and largest city, and the Mississippi Delta region is widely regarded as a birthplace of the blues.

Example: The casino resort in Biloxi, MS reopened after the hurricane repairs.

AP and traditional style use Miss., the same word as the courtesy title, so context matters in headlines. MS has been the code since 1963 and is often mistaken for Massachusetts (MA) or Missouri (MO). MS also abbreviates multiple sclerosis, Microsoft and manuscript, and as an ISO country code it means Montserrat.

2. Ms. (title for a woman regardless of marital status) (Ms.)

Writing & Everyday · Title and Honorific Abbreviations

Marriage-neutral courtesy title for a woman, equivalent to Mr. for men. It is the default form for women in most US business correspondence and is widely used on forms, in schools and in news writing.

Example: Ms. Chen will present the quarterly results at Thursday's all-hands meeting.

Ms. is not short for any longer word; it blends Miss and Mrs. It was proposed in a Massachusetts newspaper in 1901 and popularized in the 1970s by the women's movement and by Ms. magazine, launched in 1972. Pronounced "miz." British usage omits the period, and dictionaries list Mses. or Mss. as rarely used plurals.

3. Master of Science

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

Graduate degree in science, engineering, mathematics, health or business analytics, usually one to two years of coursework with either a research thesis or a non-thesis project. A thesis MS is often a stepping stone to a PhD, while non-thesis programs are aimed at industry.

Example: Applicants to the MS in data science need calculus, linear algebra and Python experience.

AP style writes M.S.; Chicago uses MS. British and Commonwealth universities use MSc, and MIT uses SM. Not to be confused with MS as multiple sclerosis or Mississippi, or with the Indian medical MS (Master of Surgery). STEM-designated MS programs qualify international graduates for the 24-month OPT extension.

4. Multiple sclerosis

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Chronic immune-mediated disease in which the body's immune system attacks myelin in the brain, optic nerves and spinal cord, causing episodes of vision loss, numbness, weakness, imbalance and fatigue. It is usually diagnosed between ages 20 and 50 and affects women two to three times as often as men.

Example: MS diagnosed per 2017 McDonald criteria after optic neuritis and new enhancing lesions; starting ocrelizumab.

Nearly 1 million people in the United States and an estimated 2.8 million worldwide live with MS. Diagnosis relies on the McDonald criteria, requiring lesions disseminated in space and time on MRI or clinical grounds, with CSF oligoclonal bands as supportive evidence. A 2022 study of US military personnel strongly linked prior Epstein-Barr virus infection to MS risk. MS can also mean mitral stenosis or morphine sulfate, so drug orders should never use it.

5. Millisecond (ms)

Units & Measurements · Time Abbreviations

One thousandth of a second, the unit for network latency (ping), reaction times, audio delay, shutter lag and software performance. A typical human visual reaction time is about 200 to 250 ms.

Example: Ping to the game server averages 18 ms on a wired connection.

Online gamers generally consider a ping under 50 ms good, and the ITU recommends keeping one-way delay on voice calls below about 150 ms. An eye blink lasts roughly 100 to 400 ms. Uppercase MS is unrelated, standing for Microsoft, multiple sclerosis or Mississippi.

6. Mass spectrometry

Science & Engineering · Chemistry Abbreviations

Technique that converts molecules into ions and sorts them by mass-to-charge ratio, giving a molecule's mass and, from its fragments, clues to its structure. Mass spectrometers are attached to chromatographs, used in proteomics, radiocarbon dating and drug discovery, and carried on space probes to analyze planetary atmospheres.

Example: High-resolution MS gave a molecular ion at m/z 285.1362, matching the proposed formula.

J. J. Thomson built an early mass spectrograph and used it in 1913 to reveal two isotopes of neon. In papers MS names the technique, while "mass spectrometer" is the instrument; "mass spectroscopy" is an older, less favored term. MS also abbreviates Master of Science and multiple sclerosis in other fields, so context matters.

7. Manuscript

Writing & Everyday · Citation and Bibliography Abbreviations · also used in entertainment

Identifies a handwritten or typed document, or an author's unpublished draft, in citations, archives and publishing. Archival citations give the collection and the manuscript number, as in "MS 408."

Example: The Voynich manuscript, held at Yale's Beinecke Library as MS 408, remains undeciphered.

The plural is MSS. Capitalized MS, with or without a period, is standard in archival citations, while publishers still say "ms." for a submitted manuscript even when it is a digital file. The Latin source is manu scriptum, "written by hand." In medicine MS means multiple sclerosis.

8. Middle school

Education & Academia · K-12 Education Abbreviations

School serving early adolescents, typically grades 6 to 8, between elementary and high school. Students usually rotate among subject teachers for the first time, often organized into interdisciplinary teams.

Example: The MS band concert is Thursday at 7 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Middle schools largely replaced the older junior high model (grades 7 to 9) from the 1960s onward. The Association for Middle Level Education promotes team teaching and advisory programs. In higher education MS usually means Master of Science, and in medicine multiple sclerosis.

9. EgyptAir

Transportation & Travel · Airline Code Abbreviations

Egypt's national airline, based at Cairo International Airport and a member of Star Alliance. It is one of the oldest airlines in Africa and the Middle East.

Example: EgyptAir MS 986 from JFK lands in Cairo in the late afternoon.

ICAO code MSR; callsign "Egyptair." The code letters come from "Misr," the Arabic name for Egypt. Founded in 1932 as Misr Airwork. Its logo features Horus, the falcon-headed god of ancient Egypt.

10. Mitral stenosis

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Narrowing of the mitral valve opening that obstructs flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle, raising left atrial pressure. Worldwide the main cause is rheumatic heart disease, whereas in older adults in high-income countries calcification of the mitral annulus is increasingly common.

Example: TTE: rheumatic MS, mitral valve area 1.1 cm2, mean gradient 11 mmHg; candidate for balloon valvotomy.

Classic findings are an opening snap and a low-pitched diastolic rumble at the apex, plus atrial fibrillation from left atrial enlargement. Severe MS is defined as a valve area of 1.5 cm2 or less. MS most often means multiple sclerosis, and it sits on The Joint Commission's "Do Not Use" list because in medication orders it can mean morphine sulfate or magnesium sulfate; write "mitral stenosis" in full where confusion is possible.

11. Morphine sulfate

Medical · Drug Abbreviations

Shorthand for morphine sulfate that appears on The Joint Commission "Do Not Use" list because it can mean either morphine sulfate or magnesium sulfate. Confusion between the two has caused fatal errors.

Example: Nurse queried "MS 4 mg IV" and confirmed it was morphine, not magnesium.

The Joint Commission requires "morphine sulfate" or "magnesium sulfate" to be written in full. MS has many other medical meanings, including multiple sclerosis, mitral stenosis and musculoskeletal, which adds to the ambiguity. Brand names such as MS Contin are allowed as complete product names.

12. Member of the Senedd

Government & Politics · UK Government Abbreviations

Elected member of the Senedd, the Welsh Parliament in Cardiff Bay, which legislates on devolved matters such as health, education and transport in Wales. The title replaced "Assembly Member" (AM) in 2020.

Example: Each MS represents a constituency under the new system introduced for the 2026 election.

The National Assembly for Wales was created in 1999 and renamed Senedd Cymru, or the Welsh Parliament, in 2020. A 2024 law enlarged it from 60 to 96 members elected by closed-list proportional representation starting with the 2026 election. In medicine MS means multiple sclerosis.

13. Master of Surgery

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

Postgraduate surgical degree in India, awarded after the MBBS and a three-year residency in fields such as general surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology or ophthalmology. It is the surgical counterpart of the Indian postgraduate MD and is obtained through the NEET-PG entrance exam.

Example: Dr. Rao completed his MS in orthopedics at a government medical college in Hyderabad.

Indian doctors list it with the specialty, as in "MBBS, MS (General Surgery)". Further super-specialty surgical training leads to the MCh. In the UK, the ChM and MS are instead higher degrees in surgery offered by only a few universities.

14. Motor ship

Transportation & Travel · Maritime Abbreviations

Ship prefix, also written M/S, used for diesel-powered vessels, particularly by cruise lines and European ferry companies. Holland America Line and many river cruise operators style their ships this way.

Example: We sailed to Alaska aboard MS Eurodam out of Seattle.

MS and MV are interchangeable in meaning; which one a company uses is largely tradition. In Germany and Scandinavia, MS is the usual prefix for passenger ships. The letters have many unrelated meanings, including multiple sclerosis, Microsoft and the honorific Ms.

15. Medium shot

Arts & Entertainment · Film, Television and Theater Abbreviations

Shot showing a subject from about the waist up, balancing facial expression with body language and some surroundings. It is a common framing for dialogue scenes.

Example: Two-shot, MS, as they argue across the kitchen counter.

Shot sizes run from extreme wide (EWS) through wide (WS), medium (MS) and medium close-up (MCU) to close-up (CU). Exact definitions vary between productions. In publishing MS means manuscript.

16. Montserrat

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean whose capital, Plymouth, was buried and abandoned after the Soufrière Hills volcano began erupting in 1995. Government now operates from Brades in the north.

Example: Microsoft's aka.ms shortener uses the .ms domain of MS, the island of Montserrat.

About two-thirds of the population left after the eruptions. Montserrat is nicknamed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean for its Irish heritage. The alpha-3 code is MSR.
