1. Small

Units & Measurements · Cooking Abbreviations

Ingredient lists use sm for the size of produce and other whole items, as in 1 sm onion or 2 sm zucchini. Small items can yield only half the chopped volume of large ones, which is why precise recipes add a weight.

Example: Finely dice 1 sm shallot and sweat it in butter until translucent.

Used with med and lg; capitalized SM, MD and LG appear on menus, cups and clothing tags. Small eggs are a USDA size class of at least 18 oz per dozen and are rarely used in baking, which assumes large eggs. Well-written recipes give weights, e.g. "1 sm onion (about 4 oz)".

2. Standard Model (SM)

Science & Engineering · Physics Abbreviations

Theory of particle physics that describes all known elementary particles, six quarks, six leptons, the force-carrying gauge bosons and the Higgs boson, and three of the four fundamental forces. Developed in the 1960s and 1970s, it has passed every collider test so far, culminating in the Higgs discovery in 2012.

Example: The measured decay rate agrees with the SM prediction within experimental uncertainty.

The Standard Model leaves out gravity, dark matter and dark energy, and in its original form treats neutrinos as massless, so physicists search for "physics beyond the Standard Model" (BSM). Its key architects include Sheldon Glashow, Abdus Salam and Steven Weinberg, who unified the electromagnetic and weak forces.

3. So much (SM)

Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations

Intensifier in phrases like "thanks sm" or "love you sm," adding warmth to thanks and compliments. Very common among Gen Z texters, usually in lowercase at the end of a message.

Example: Thank you sm for the birthday gift, I love it!

On social media SM can also mean "social media," so context matters. Friendly and warm in tone. In work chat, "thanks sm" is usually acceptable among peers but too casual for clients.

4. Social media (SM)

Texting & Internet Slang · Social Media Abbreviations

Shorthand for social media in marketing, journalism and casual conversation, as in "SM manager," "SM strategy" or "posted it on SM." Common in job listings and digital-marketing reports.

Example: Our SM strategy this quarter focuses on short videos for TikTok and Reels.

Common in marketing job titles and agency jargon, though many style guides prefer spelling out the phrase. In texting, "sm" usually means "so much," as in "thanks sm," which its position after a verb makes clear.

5. Scrum Master (SM)

Business & Finance · Project Management Abbreviations

Scrum role accountable for the team's effectiveness, coaching the team and organization in Scrum, facilitating events when needed and removing impediments.

Example: Our SM noticed that standups were turning into status reports and changed the format.

The 2020 Scrum Guide describes Scrum Masters as "true leaders who serve" the team and organization. The role has no authority over the team's work, unlike a traditional project manager.

6. Service mark (SM)

Law & Legal · Intellectual Property Abbreviations

Mark used to identify and distinguish the source of services rather than goods, such as those of a bank, airline, restaurant chain or consulting firm. The superscript SM symbol signals a claim to an unregistered service mark.

Example: The consulting firm's new tagline carries an SM until its registration issues.

Service marks receive the same protection as trademarks under the Lanham Act and, once registered, use the same circle-R symbol. Most people simply say "trademark" for both. Outside IP, SM can mean sergeant major in the military.

7. Scientiae Magister (Master of Science) (SM)

Education & Academia · Degree Abbreviations

Latin-order Master of Science awarded by MIT and by Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and School of Public Health. It is equivalent to an MS and at MIT usually requires a research thesis.

Example: She completed an SM in aeronautics and astronautics at MIT before joining NASA.

Written S.M. in older documents. MIT also offers a rarer "Engineer" degree that sits between the SM and the PhD. Outside these schools, SM can mean many unrelated things, including sergeant major and Society of Mary, so CVs usually add the institution.

8. Stage manager (SM)

Arts & Entertainment · Film, Television and Theater Abbreviations

Theater professional who runs rehearsals and every performance, calling light, sound and set cues from a script known as the prompt book. The SM is in charge backstage once a show opens.

Example: The SM called "standby lights 42" over the headset.

In the US, professional stage managers are typically members of Actors' Equity. A production stage manager (PSM) leads the team on Broadway. The prompt book records blocking, cues and notes for every performance.

9. San Marino (SM)

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Enclave within Italy and one of the world's smallest countries, which claims to be the oldest surviving republic, traditionally founded in 301. The City of San Marino is the capital, and SMR the alpha-3 code.

Example: Collectors buy stamps and euro coins issued by SM, which mints its own designs.

San Marino has two Captains Regent who serve as joint heads of state for six-month terms. The language code sm is Samoan.

10. Samarium (Sm)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Samarium-cobalt magnets are less powerful than neodymium magnets but keep their strength at high temperatures, suiting them to aerospace and military motors; samarium is element 62, a lanthanide. Samarium-153 is used in radiopharmaceuticals that relieve pain from cancer spread to bone.

Example: For the 250 °C actuator, the design team specified Sm-Co magnets instead of NdFeB.

Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran isolated samarium in 1879 from the mineral samarskite, which honors Russian mining engineer Vasili Samarsky-Bykhovets. Samarium is therefore often cited as the first element named, indirectly, after a person. Samarium(II) iodide is a popular reagent in organic synthesis.

11. Society of Mary (SM)

Religion · Religious Title Abbreviations

Initials shared by two Catholic congregations: the Marianists, founded in France by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade in 1817, who sponsor the University of Dayton, and the Marists, founded by Jean-Claude Colin and approved in 1836, active in Oceania and education.

Example: Br. Raymond Fitz, SM, served as president of the University of Dayton.

Because both groups use SM, context or the full name is needed to tell them apart. The Marist Brothers, a separate congregation, use FMS. In the military, SM means sergeant major.
