1. Lucky-Goldstar

Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations

South Korean conglomerate whose companies include LG Electronics (TVs, appliances), LG Chem and LG Energy Solution (batteries) and LG Display. Headquartered in Seoul.

Example: Our new LG fridge tells us when the water filter needs changing.

Founded in 1947 by Koo In-hwoi as Lak-Hui Chemical (pronounced "Lucky"); its GoldStar electronics brand followed in 1958. The group rebranded as LG in 1995, and its slogan "Life's Good" is sometimes mistaken for the meaning of the letters. The Koo family still controls the group.

2. Large (lg)

Units & Measurements · Cooking Abbreviations

Recipes use lg for the size of eggs, produce and cans. Unless stated otherwise, American baking recipes assume large eggs, a USDA class of at least 24 oz per dozen, or about 50 g of egg without the shell.

Example: Beat 2 lg eggs with the milk and pour the mixture over the bread cubes.

Also written LG or lge. Egg sizes are not international: a UK large egg weighs 63 to 73 g in the shell, noticeably heavier than an American large egg at about 57 g, so British recipes calling for large eggs use bigger eggs. One large lemon yields roughly 3 tablespoons of juice.

3. Logarithm (base 10 or base 2) (lg)

Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations

Compact logarithm notation whose base depends on the field: the ISO 80000-2 standard defines lg as the base-10 (common) logarithm, while many computer science texts use lg for the base-2 logarithm.

Example: Binary search on n items takes at most about lg n comparisons.

Russian and many European textbooks use lg for log₁₀, matching the ISO standard. In algorithms, the widely used textbook Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen and colleagues writes lg n for log₂ n. Check a book's conventions before assuming either base.
