1. Manchester Airport
Transportation & Travel · Airport Code Abbreviations
Busiest airport in the UK outside London, located about 9 miles south of Manchester city center in Ringway. It serves northern England with long-haul and leisure routes.
Example: Plenty of Jet2 holidays to Spain go out of MAN every morning in summer.
ICAO code EGCC. Opened in 1938 and originally known as Ringway, it is owned mostly by local councils through the Manchester Airports Group, which also owns Stansted. Its two parallel runways make it the only UK airport other than Heathrow with two full-length runways. A rail station links it to much of northern England.
2. Manitoba (Man.)
Geography & Places · Canadian Province and Territory Abbreviations
Canadian Press and traditional abbreviation of Manitoba, written after a city name in news copy, as in BRANDON, Man. Older maps and directories also use it.
Example: BRANDON, Man. — Flood crews raised the dikes along the Assiniboine River overnight.
Because Man. is also an English word, Manitoba writers often spell out the province in headlines. Postal addresses require MB.
3. Metropolitan area network
Technology & Computing · Networking Abbreviations
Covers a city or large campus, linking buildings and LANs over distances of a few to tens of kilometers, usually with fiber. Municipal networks, multi-site universities and cable operators' metro rings are typical examples.
Example: The district's MAN connects all 40 schools to the central data center over dark fiber.
Sits between LAN and WAN in the textbook hierarchy. The IEEE 802.6 standard (DQDB) was designed specifically for metropolitan networks in the early 1990s, and Metro Ethernet services later became the common approach. The term appears mostly in networking courses and certification exams rather than everyday conversation.
4. Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg
Organizations & Companies · Company and Brand Abbreviations
German manufacturer of trucks, buses and engines, now operating as MAN Truck & Bus within Volkswagen's Traton group. Headquartered in Munich.
Example: The city ordered 40 electric MAN buses for its downtown routes.
The name means "Augsburg-Nuremberg Machine Works" and was adopted in 1908. Rudolf Diesel built the first working diesel engine at the company's Augsburg works in the 1890s. MAN also builds large two-stroke engines that power many of the world's container ships.
