1. Small modular reactor

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Nuclear reactor with an electrical output of up to about 300 megawatts, designed to be built largely in factories and shipped to sites as modules. Supporters hope SMRs will be cheaper and faster to build than large reactors and suit smaller grids, industrial sites and data centers.

Example: The utility plans to build four SMR units at a former coal plant site to reuse its grid connection.

In 2023 NuScale's 50-megawatt module became the first SMR design certified by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, but its first planned project in Idaho was canceled that year over rising costs. Ontario Power Generation has chosen the GE-Hitachi BWRX-300 for its Darlington site, intended as one of the first grid-scale SMRs in North America. Russia operates a floating plant with two small reactors.

2. Spinal motion restriction

Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations

Approach to protecting the spine in trauma patients that limits unnecessary movement using a cervical collar, padding and careful handling, rather than strapping everyone to a rigid backboard.

Example: SMR: C-collar applied, pt self-extricated, secured to stretcher.

A 2018 joint position statement from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, ACEP and the National Association of EMS Physicians endorsed SMR over routine immobilization. Long backboards cause pain, pressure injuries and breathing restriction. Selective protocols decide who needs a collar.

3. Steam methane reforming

Science & Engineering · Energy Abbreviations

Main industrial method of producing hydrogen, reacting natural gas with high-temperature steam over a nickel catalyst to yield hydrogen, carbon monoxide and then carbon dioxide. SMR supplies most of the hydrogen used in refineries and ammonia plants.

Example: The refinery's SMR unit produces hydrogen for removing sulfur from diesel.

Producing a kilogram of hydrogen by SMR releases roughly 9-10 kilograms of CO2, which is why such hydrogen is called "grey." Adding carbon capture yields "blue" hydrogen, while splitting water with renewable electricity produces "green" hydrogen. In nuclear energy SMR means small modular reactor.

4. Shingled magnetic recording

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Hard drive technology that overlaps data tracks like roof shingles to fit more data on each platter. Rewriting data requires rewriting neighboring tracks, which makes sustained random writes and RAID rebuilds very slow.

Example: Avoid SMR drives for the NAS; a RAID rebuild could take days.

In 2020 Western Digital faced criticism and lawsuits after it was revealed that some WD Red NAS drives used SMR without disclosure; the company then created the Red Plus line with conventional recording. Drive-managed SMR hides the shingling from the computer, while host-managed SMR, used in data centers, lets software organize writes efficiently.
