1. Southwest
Geography & Places · Direction Abbreviations
Intercardinal direction between south and west, at 225 degrees, and a quadrant in Washington, D.C., Calgary and other cities. The US Southwest usually means Arizona and New Mexico plus neighboring parts of Texas, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and California.
Example: The Smithsonian Castle is at 1000 Jefferson Dr SW in Washington.
SW is D.C.'s smallest quadrant by area. Southwest Airlines and shortwave radio also use the letters.
2. Social work
Medical · Hospital Abbreviations
Hospital department and professional service addressing patients' psychosocial needs: discharge planning, family support, insurance and financial issues, safety concerns, and connections to community resources.
Example: SW consulted for unsafe discharge home; APS referral made.
Medical social workers often hold an MSW degree and state license (LMSW or LCSW). They frequently lead advance directive conversations and family meetings. In emergency medicine "SW" can also mean stab wound, so context matters.
3. Stab wound
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations
Penetrating injury from a knife or other sharp object, documented by location, length and suspected depth. Abdominal and chest stab wounds may need surgery depending on stability and exam.
Example: SW to L flank, 2 cm; hemodynamically stable; CT with triple contrast.
Management ranges from local wound exploration to emergency laparotomy. Impaled objects are left in place until surgery. In hospital records SW more often means social work, so trauma notes usually write "stab wound" in full.
4. Software
Technology & Computing · Software Abbreviations
Shorthand for software in engineering documents, job titles, version labels and specification sheets, often paired with HW for hardware. Typical uses include "SW engineer" and "SW version 3.2".
Example: Device info: HW rev C, SW version 4.1.7.
Common in industry, test reports and embedded systems but rare in consumer writing. The word "software" first appeared in print in 1958 in an article by statistician John Tukey. Outside technology, SW means southwest in compass directions and addresses.
5. Steelworker
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Seabees who fabricate and erect steel structures, pre-engineered buildings, towers, bridges and tanks, and who cut, rig and weld metal in the field, often far from established shipyards or depots.
Example: SW1 Kaplan supervised the steel erection for the new aircraft shelter.
Steelworkers often work at height and handle rigging for heavy lifts alongside equipment operators. Their training includes welding certifications that transfer to civilian ironworking careers. In compass directions SW means southwest, and in many Navy documents SW also appears in warfare qualification titles.
