SNF stands for Skilled nursing facility, a hospital abbreviation.
Facility providing short-term skilled nursing and rehabilitation after a hospital stay, or long-term nursing home care. Medicare Part A covers skilled stays only after a qualifying hospital admission.
Example: D/C to SNF for PT/OT after hip fracture repair; bed confirmed.
Usage notes
Pronounced "sniff". Medicare covers up to 100 days per benefit period: days 1 to 20 in full, then a daily copay, and only after a three-day inpatient stay (some Medicare Advantage plans waive this). Many SNFs also house long-term residents paid for by Medicaid or privately.
