Tele stands for Telemetry, a hospital abbreviation.
Hospital unit or monitoring status in which patients wear portable ECG transmitters that send heart rhythms continuously to a central station. It is used for chest pain, arrhythmias, syncope and new cardiac medications.
Example: Admit to tele for syncope, rule out arrhythmia; continuous monitoring.
Usage notes
Monitor technicians often watch the central screens and alert nurses to rhythm changes. American Heart Association practice standards list indications for monitoring, and overuse can cause alarm fatigue. Telemetry units may also be called cardiac step-down units.
