1. Your or you're
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Shortcut for both "your" and "you're," as in "ur phone" or "ur so funny." Common in texts, comments and captions among all age groups.
Example: Ur the best, thanks for picking me up!
Its double use means the writer never has to choose between "your" and "you're," a common spelling mistake. Widely understood but considered sloppy in formal writing. In history, Ur was an ancient Sumerian city, a far different context.
2. Utilization review
Medical · Hospital Abbreviations
Process of reviewing hospital admissions and continued stays against clinical criteria to confirm the level of care is medically necessary. It is a Medicare condition of participation for hospitals.
Example: UR review: meets inpatient criteria for continued IV therapy.
Hospitals and insurers use criteria sets such as InterQual and MCG. A physician advisor reviews cases that do not meet criteria. UR decisions determine whether patients stay as inpatients or under observation.
3. Unconditioned response
Science & Engineering · Psychology Abbreviations
In classical conditioning, the natural, unlearned reaction to an unconditioned stimulus, such as salivating when food is in the mouth or flinching at a sudden noise. It occurs automatically, without prior learning.
Example: Blinking when a puff of air hits the eye is a UR used in eyeblink conditioning studies.
Some textbooks use UCR instead. Eyeblink conditioning in rabbits and humans became a model system for mapping the brain circuits of learning, particularly in the cerebellum. In texting, "ur" means "your" or "you're," an unrelated usage.
