1. Usual, customary and reasonable
Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations
Amount an insurer considers the normal charge for a service in a geographic area, used to calculate out-of-network payments. When a provider charges more than the UCR amount, the patient may be billed the difference.
Example: The plan paid 70% of UCR, leaving a $640 balance bill from the out-of-network surgeon.
A 2009 settlement with New York's attorney general found that a widely used database had understated UCR rates and led to the creation of the independent FAIR Health database. Many plans now set out-of-network payments as a percentage of Medicare rates instead. Also called "reasonable and customary".
2. Uniform Crime Reporting
Government & Politics · Police Abbreviations
FBI program that collects crime statistics from US law enforcement agencies, used to publish national crime data since 1930. It has transitioned to incident-based reporting through NIBRS.
Example: The UCR figures show violent crime fell in the city for the third straight year.
The older summary system counted only the most serious offense in each incident under the "hierarchy rule." Participation is voluntary, and gaps in reporting after the 2021 switch to NIBRS made national estimates less certain. Criminologists also use the separate National Crime Victimization Survey, which captures unreported crimes.
3. University of California, Riverside
Education & Academia · University Abbreviations
Inland Empire campus of the University of California that grew out of the Citrus Experiment Station, founded in 1907, and opened as an undergraduate college in 1954. It is noted for social mobility rankings and agricultural research.
Example: UCR's citrus variety collection holds more than a thousand types of citrus trees.
The university's Highlanders compete in the Big West Conference. UCR joined the Association of American Universities in 2023. It brands itself "UC Riverside".
