VOP
Stands forViolation of probation
CategoriesLaw & Legal

VOP stands for Violation of probation, a criminal law abbreviation also used in government.

Allegation or finding that a person on probation broke a condition of supervision, such as committing a new crime, failing a drug test, missing appointments or not paying restitution. A VOP can lead to stricter conditions, jail time or revocation and resentencing.

Example: He was arrested on a VOP warrant after testing positive for fentanyl twice.

Usage notes

Technical violations break supervision rules without a new crime, while substantive violations involve new offenses. Revocation hearings usually require proof only by a preponderance of the evidence, and Gagnon v. Scarpelli (1973) gives probationers limited due process rights. Federal practice speaks of violations of supervised release instead.
