CategoriesMedical

AIIR stands for Airborne infection isolation room, a hospital abbreviation.

Single-patient negative-pressure room that pulls air inward and exhausts it safely outside or through HEPA filters, used for patients with airborne infections such as tuberculosis, measles or chickenpox.

Example: Rule out TB: place in AIIR, N95 for all staff entering.

Usage notes

CDC guidance calls for at least 12 air changes per hour in new or renovated rooms. Negative pressure should be checked daily while in use. Staff need fit-tested N95 respirators or powered air-purifying respirators. Older documents call it a negative-pressure isolation room.
